80's Wednesday

Thanks to a good friend named Joel throwing up the Dexy's Midnight Runners classic "Come On Eileen" this morning on Facebook I have decided to give you guys a little trip through the 80's and mainly the new wave music of the 80's. This is a type of music that really is one of my favorite eras of music. I just pretty much always enjoy it and some of the songs like the aforementioned "Come On Eileen" never fail to put a smile on my face. So I suppose it would be messed up if I didn't start us off with that song.

Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners

That song was the bands biggest hit but they were pretty talented overall I think. They were thought of as a New Wave and Northern Soul band and that was a type of music that didn't get all that much radio play. But there was some cool stuff.

Johnny on the Monorail - The Buggles

I know nothing about this band and I suppose that I should. but, I do know that I really like this song. It seems to hit a lot of the typical notes that this kind of music usually had. It reminds me of the Boomtown Rats song "I Don't Like Mondays" I am honestly not sure which song came first so I may be comitting some sort of horrible mistake by making that comparison.

Souvenir - OMD

This is another band that I do not think that I have really listened to all that much. I think that most of my listening to the New Wave stuff was pretty limited by the radio in my town. So it is nice to have Spotify, in this case, to bring me some things that I haven't really listened to before.

Glass Spider - David Bowie

Now this is interesting because I am almost positive that this album came out in the late 90's but perhaps I am wrong. I was wrong the album came out in 1987. I like Bowie and therefor I like this song. It really doesn't matter if radio or the ignorant mouth breathers didn't like it or not. Bowie is transcendent and always will be. BOWIE 4 EVA!!!

Well this was interesting. When I decided to do this, I expected it to be a little more of the new wave that I think of when I think of new wave but I liked what popped on the random. I will have to try this again some other time and see if I am surprised again.

Musical Monday

I am not sure why, but I decided to bring you guys some music today from all of the singers of female persuasuion in my collection. I should say rather that I am going to try to if the internet gets better. So we shall see.

Americano - Lady Gaga

I have a fondness in my heart for pop music and dance pop is one of the things that I really do enjoy. I used to be a little ashamed of my taste in that kind of music but for me there are times when I really do just plain enjoy it. I like tapping my toes to the beat and basically dancing along. As far as Lady Gaga goes, I do think that she is kind of a freak but I also like her music. There is just something about it.

Damn - Katy Perry

I like Katy Perry and I honestly do not care who knows it. There is something to her music that I enjoy and it honestly has nothing to do with how she looks. Though I do think she is attractive. I like the sound of her voice and I like the way her songs are produced. I am not really a big fan of the marketed persona that she puts on. I think most of the modern pop singers anymore are almost as much actors as they are singers. They put on a face and a persona for the fans and the gossip websites and that is how they attract their fanbases. I suppose it is the same for the make singers as well, though I do not think that their sexuality is as tied up in it as it is for the women.

Some Kind of Woman - Stevie Nicks

Classic, classic music and Stevie Nicks put out some great solo work. I really do love her voice and can listen to her music pretty much anytime.

All The Boys Want - Emily Osment

The youngers sister of Haley Joel Osment from the Sixth Sense film. She was in Hannah Montana with Miley Cyrus and has since pursued an acting and singing career though her sound changed from the dance pop sound of this album to a more blue grass country sound with a new group called Ramshackle. I actually like her sound better like this then the new stuff.

That is it for me today folks. I hope you had a decent Veterans Day.

Friday Friday Friday

Hit that random button music man and lets see what we get.

Five On The Five - The Raconteurs

This is basically Jack White with a full band. I really like it though It is really just basic overall rock and roll and I like it so much.

Love Reign O'er Me - The Who

I really can't say more about this song then I have said before. The band and the song are amazing and it comes off of my favorite album of al. As far as I am concerned there is not a better album.

Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends - Joan Osborne

This is just a lovely song. So nice to listen too.

Hope You Never - Tom Petty

Another song that I really just enjoy listening too.

That is it for today folks. Catch you later.

Wild Wednesday

Let us keep the music rolling shall we. I am interested to find out if there is some sort of theme that pops up today.

Angel Dream (no.2) - Tom Petty

This is an artist that I did not give nearly enough credit to when he was considered "popular" but the more that I listen to his stuff now the better I find it. The album that this song is from in particular is very good.

Love Song - Pink

As I have grown older I have embraced my enjoyment of pop music and female pop singers. Actually I have embraced my love of music in general, all types of music. Pink is an artist that is problematic for me. I really do like some of her songs but overall she has more misses then hits for me.

Traces - Dennis Yost and The Classics

This is a pretty maudlin song and is pretty much a good example of some of the stuff that was pretty popular in the 70's. It isn't the worst song ever but I bet some people would say that it comes pretty close.

Waggy - Blink 182

Another one from Blink that is actually a pretty cool song when not performed live. I think it is a very solid pop-punk song. The main guitar riff is a little bit Black Sabbath and I enjoy that.

Angel Island - Peter Rowan/Tony Rice

Classic kind of country bluegrass number. Very muted and subdued, I really like it.

Nothing really stands out today. I hope it is a good one for you and remember we are all just humans trying keep it together in this crazy life. Take care of each other okay.

Tuesday Tunes

Tunes on a Tuesday for you my loyal readers. Let us see what the Google Music machine creates for us today shall we.

World Go 'Round - No Doubt

This is a band that I have fond feelings for. The album Tragic Kingdom is one of my favorites between the songs and the that the majority of the songs are about Gwen Stefani's break up with the bands bassist there is an irony that just amuses me. This is not one of their hits but it is actually a pretty solid number.

Trip Through Your Wires - U2

It amuses me that this band was once considered alternative by the radio people. Though I guess it is pretty cool to go from that to being considered one of the biggest bands in the whole world and totally mainstream. All that aside. I genuinely enjoy their music.

The Only Way To Be - Save Ferris

There are not a lot of ska bands with female singers. This is one of them and like No Doubt they are very enjoyable to listen too. I think Monique Powell has a great voice. The just itself had some MTV action and a little bit of radio but never seemed to be able to break through. I enjoy their music.

Dumpweed - Blink 182

In my mind this was probably the best Blink 182 album. There are probably people who would disagree with me but I think this came at a time when they were still excited about playing music and still writing songs that were personal to them.

Perfect Stranger - Dropkick Murphys

This is a perfect example of a band that I do not really care for. Though I have met their lead singer when Flogging Molly opened for them and he was a very nice man. I think it is more their fan base or what I perceive as their fan base that bugs me. I suppose I shouldn't let that stop me from liking their music but it does.

I hope you enjoyed the music today. Have a great one folks.

Music Monday

Good Monday to you brethren. I decided that we are going to keep it going with the Alternative Music Genre as decided by the Google music machine. So here we go.

Sister, Do You Know My Name - The White Stripes

I can honestly say that this is a band that I always enjoy hearing. I really do not think that there is a song that The White Stripes did that I enjoy listening too. Some are more loud and ruckus then others and some are more bluesey but all are just plain worth listening too.

Black Girls - Violent Femmes

Nice, nice, nice. This is another band that I always enjoy listening to and the overall history of the band is one that is very interesting as well. I hope that the song causes you to look them up. I do not think that you will be disappointed at all. There are some very sweet drums and cowbell in this song as well.

What's Left of the Flag - Flogging Molly

This is a band that I very much enjoy and a band that brings back some great memories of some very good times with friends seeing them perform. I watched them live many, many times and they have never ever disappointed.

The Likes of You Again - Flogging Molly

I need to dedicate this to my friend Eric. That is all that needs to be said. Eric, you are forever missed.

Apple Blossom - The White Stripes

A great song, just flows so smoothly.

Grey Day - Madness

Yes, Yes, Yes. Some classic 2nd wave ska. Madness is one of the great ones and this is one of their great songs and one that is pretty appropriate for me at times. Regardless I love it.

Well that is it for me. I hope you folks enjoyed the music today and the rest of your day goes well.

Friday the 1st of Nov

Up and at it early today, is a good thing. I decided I am going to try to work through the music library again but using the musical genre options that Google Music has allowed me. I think that could create an interesting mix of music to hear. So the first genre is ACOUSTIC.

Dallas Green - Like Knives

I like Dallas Green. He has done some solo work and some work as "City and Color" which pretty much sounds like the Dallas Green solo stuff. I enjoy the mellowness of it as well as the depth of the lyrical content. That for me is often more important then the actual music. But not always.

Dallas Green - Sometimes I Wish

Well right off the bat, we have back to back Dallas Green songs. This is one of my favorite of his songs actually, because don't we all at times wish for life to have been a little different. Are any of us totally satisfied and have no desire for change at all? I don't think we are. I think it is pretty fluid and there are times where we are happy with how things are and other times when we wish desperately for some kind of change. I know that, for me, at least that is the truth. It is my truth and I wouldn't force it on others and I have found a way to be comfortable with that aspect of my self and for sure there are times when I am very much satisfied.

City and Colour - Day Old Hate

So while this technically isn't Dallas Green this is his group. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by this. There is some kind of logic to the Google Music programming that makes no sense to me. I believe that I have a large amount of acoustic music in my collection but I wonder if we are going to get to hear anything else. I do know that if I was using Spotify I would be hearing all kinds of different things but they would not be bands that I own and I would rather bring you a look at the music the resides in my collection.

Okay I jumped genres because that was going to be nothing but City and Colour and I just can't do it. So we are now residing in the ALTERNATIVE genre and that should be a much better mix of things. At least as far as I am concerned and since this is my blog. I spake it and it is made so.

New Church - Lords of the New Church

Nice...right off of the bat and we are into some of the goth music that I like. So I am very happy about the switch. I actually like goth music a lot. It isn't something that I listen to all of the time but when I do I always enjoy it and there are times when I really do seek it out to listen to.

Rolling By - Big Scary

I honestly have never heard this song before. I didn't even know it was in my collection. But wow, talk about a sad, sad and lovely song. So good. This is a song that I could easily find myself sitting and listening to and even crying a little bit because I am just that kind of guy. They are called emotions people and those of us who have a soul get affected by nice and lovely and beautiful things. It does not make me less of a man then the next man. So get over your old and out of touch ideas of masculinity and understand that things are different then when grampa was cutting maple trees for syrup.

Five Iron Frenzy - Milestone

Nice! I always like a little bit of Christian 3rd wave ska and any type of ska just makes me bounce in my seat and brings a smile to my face. If I were a DR I would recommend a serving of Ska everyday to keep a smile on your face. There is just something about it that I really do enjoy.

Todd Rundgren - A Dream Goes on Forever

This is a nice song to end things on. Have a good Friday folks. I hope people get to do some relaxing this weekend.
